Jerry Pankow
Jerry, the youngest of the three, was 20. He attended church with Dick and Dick’s brother, Bob, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Denver. Jerry enlisted after his high school graduation. His army days were spent in Germany, with the Fifth Field Artillery, 1st Infantry Division. By 1949, he was also a student on the GI bill at Denver University, studying chemistry.
Like both Dick and Johnny, Jerry was also an avid skier. He worked for the ski patrol in the mountains above Denver and kept busy with Walther League, a young people’s group at St. John’s. Jerry played the lead in one of the Walther League amateur theater productions. He was also involved with Walther League square dancing and worked 40 hours a week while he was taking classes at Denver University.
